Schattel was founded in 1924 by William Schattel specifically to relocate German and Bohemian farming families from East Bernard, near the Texas coast, into this part of South Texas. Plans at founding called for around 30 houses along with a filling station, a church, a school, and a cotton gin. The community's post office, which had previously operated under the name Miguel, moved here and ran until Schattel's death in 1927.
